Real wealth is not about money

I love connecting with people to understand their situation and what motivates them. This has been a theme for me throughout a number of roles I’ve had over the years, whether that be a coach, therapist, family facilitator, mediator, property investor or C25K run leader. People are wonderfully and weirdly made which makes it all so interesting physically, emotionally, mentally, and spiritually. Seeing the whole person is the joy of that connection. Married to Andrew for over 35 years and Mum to my 2 adult sons and Nana to my grandson, who is ridiculously entertaining. I’m slightly obsessed with interiors and upcycling. I ran the London Marathon in 2018 and loved it, and, will be training for the virtual London Marathon later 2021.

Money is way more than just a medium of exchange. It is hugely emotional and without much thought, we give it power in our lives. Understanding what we believe about money and how that impacts our decisions, is essential.

Real wealth is:
-not having to go to meetings
-not having to spend time with jerks
-not being locked into status games
-not feeling like you have to say “yes”
-not worrying about others claiming your time and energy.

Real wealth is about freedom. Money can help achieve these things, but
there are plenty of people who make lots of money yet aren’t free.”
James Clear, author of Atomic Habits.

Your Money Story

So, what is your money story? Most money beliefs are caught not taught.

You’ve picked them up along the way; the good, the bad, and ugly and
almost certainly from your family of origin. Now, I’m not parent-bashing
here. They parented you with the skills – and their values at the time.
However, along the way, we have the choice to elevate those values and
beliefs to check if they still serve us now. That’s your job to do.

Think about who your 3 main influencers were growing up as a kid in terms
of attitude to money? (family members/society/educators/films/church or
religious leaders)

What did you learn from them?

Specifically:
In my family, money caused …
My dad thought money was …
When I have money, I usually …
I’m afraid that if I had the money I would …
Can you recognise money blocks? Have you ever reality-checked these blocks?
Are they still true for you now?
Money blocks say thing likes:
I can’t charge that much
I can’t pay myself this amount
I should give x amount away if I’m earning y amount
No one will pay me to do this.

Do you need to shift a block?
For example, I learnt that I was expected to stay in a job that I didn’t like, and that was OK. It was somehow honourable. At least it was regular income. At one time, I was made redundant and because of my own money block, I stayed working that job as a volunteer. Crazy, I know. Through doing work on my own money story, I needed to change this to something way healthier. And I did, with the help of a coach who raised my awareness that this wasn’t, well, in the least bit normal. Or healthy. Or right. I stayed in that role, and the employer kept me in that role too. I’m grateful for the wisdom of that coach to let me discover this truth, safely. And I did the necessary money healing.
